Make Florel
Work for You
Rick Yates, GGSPro Technical Services Manager
Ethephon is a remarkable plant growth hormone with many horticultural uses. Just a sampling of the potential benefits include
increased lateral branching, combatting pre-mature buds and blooms, crop scheduling, improved plant architecture and
reducing the height of several bulb crops. Florel is the most common trade name for greenhouse use, but it is also available
under the names Collate and Verve. Most growers are at least somewhat familiar with the many attributes of Florel, thanks to the
research conducted by Peter Konjoian in the 1980s. This novel research provided the foundation that has been built
upon by other researchers and observant growers.
Some growers express frustration that they do not feel like they get the same positive results from Florel that other growers
report. Some express that they are not even able to reproduce their own good results consistently from year to year. Examining
the variables that influence the performance of this PGR can lead to more predictable and positive crop responses.
